Advanced Legal Topics in Film & Audiovisual Media
How do I protect my idea for a film? What do I need to get in writing when working with a production company? What are my rights in my movie? It can take a village to make a film (or television production, or music video, or any audiovisual work). Video production is a technical craft that combines dozens of artistic disciplines. In this presentation, art and entertainment lawyers will introduce legal issues that uniquely impact film, TV, and AV creators.

Meet Your Faculty:
Greg Kanaan, Esq. | Managing Attorney, The [Legal] Artist, PLLC
Greg Kanaan is a Connecticut-based attorney who focuses on intellectual property, business law, and contract issues for artists, filmmakers, and creative entrepreneurs. On top of providing legal services and counsel to a wide variety of creative people, Greg regularly speak at colleges, non-profit arts organizations and professional associations about how the law affects their artistic endeavors. Greg routinely presents on topics such as contract formation, negotiation, fair use, copyright and trademark, and business-related issues. Greg is the founder of the blog “The [Legal] Artist” and contributed a monthly column to MovieMaker Magazine titled “Cinema Law.” Before earning his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, Greg received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and was a television producer for seven years, producing documentary programming for such networks as Discovery Channel, TLC, Court TV and A&E. Greg is currently licensed to practice law in Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts.
Luke Blackadar, Esq. | Deputy Director, Arts & Bus. Council of Greater Boston
Luke manages A&BC’s Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Massachusetts and Connecticut. As an attorney, he advises independent artists and art nonprofits of all disciplines on creative business issues like copyright, trademark, contract, legal entities, and nonprofit corporate governance. In addition to his role at A&BC, Luke teaches Contract Drafting at Roger Williams University School of Law, and Legal Issues in Administration at Boston University Metropolitan College. Luke’s a graduate of Clark University and Northeastern University School of Law.
Yen Nguyen, Esq. | Art Law Fellow, Arts & Bus. Council of Greater Boston
Yen focuses on supporting and assisting with the expansion of legal services and the delivery of all legal programming provided by the Arts & Business Council, specifically its Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts programs. Yen teaches Contract Drafting at New England Law Boston.
