Camp Quinebaug Nursing and Horticulture Building Opens

After several years in planning, DDS has completed construction of a 1,920 square foot Nursing and Horticulture Building at Camp Quinebaug in Killingly.
The Camp is State owned and is operated by DDS North Region.  It was established in 1972 to provide a unique summer camp experience for school age children with intellectual disabilities in north eastern Connecticut.  The camp is situated on 11 acres along the Wauregan Reservoir in Killingly.  This year about 120 campers will enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, nature enrichment, arts and crafts, sports and games. http://www.ct.gov/dds/cwp/view.asp?a=2034&Q=564024 , http://www.campquinebaug.com/
The new building is adjacent to the 1,800 square foot “production” greenhouse and will now serve as the Horticulture Programs new home.
The Camp was lacking a suitable area in which DDS’ Nursing staff could privately provide first aid and also meet the day to day medical needs of campers with diverse disabilities therefore it was decided along with the new home for the very popular Horticulture Program a Nurse’s Center would be constructed.
Each area sits off of a massive covered porch and contain fully accessible restroom and shower facilities as well as a laundry center.
Each side includes cabinetry made by Connecticut Correctional Enterprises to meet our custom specifications.
This project was managed by DDS North Region with building design by Oak Park Architects and built by LaRoche Construction.  We broke ground last October and finished in mid-June with our Maintenance Department installing the cabinetry and miscellaneous items, just in time for the start of the first session.
Obviously, we are extremely pleased with the outcome and sure that this building will serve the campers and the community for many, many years to come.
