Joseph W. Drexler, Esq. was appointed the Department of Developmental Services’ (DDS) Deputy Commissioner in November 2011. Previously, he served as the department’s Director of Operations. In his new position, Mr. Drexler will primarily be responsible for the Administrative areas of the department including; Business Operations, Contracting, Waiver Management, Information Technology, Health Services and Communications.
Mr. Drexler joined the department in 1988 as Assistant Regional Director for the Northwest Region. He has since served as an Assistant to the Commissioner, and as Assistant Regional Director in the Southeast, South Central and Eastern Regions and the current South Region. He started his career in not-for-profit community programs as a direct support staff, supervisor and manager.
During his tenure at the state, Mr. Drexler, who has extensive program management, contracting and fiscal experience; led the department’s initiative to centralize contracting which eliminated the need for providers to have multiple contracts. He also simplified the Operational Plan, annual reporting and cost settlement process for providers. As an Assistant Regional Director, he expanded respite services in the state and the roles of day and residential staff in supporting families.
As Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Drexler has lead the department in enhancing revenue, expanding the use of technology to create efficiencies and developing other cost saving initiatives.
Mr. Drexler has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stonehill College, Easton, Massachusetts and a Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut, School of Law, Hartford, Connecticut. He is a member of the Connecticut Bar and has been active in his local community.
