Starting a New Family

Starting a New Family
  Success Stories
When a child is identified with a disability, families should receive accurate information about the diagnosis if they have one and be offered the opportunity to meet with other families with a child with a disability. This is a time when the extended family may also need support understanding the implications of a child’s disability. If the opportunity arises, families may want to meet youth, and adults with disabilities who can help them begin to shape a positive vision for the future filled with possibilities. This will help families articulate positive expectations of what their child can accomplish very early in his or her life. Families may also want information about advocacy and family organizations in the community that can help them along the way. *Wingspread Report, 2011
