Gov. Malloy And Lt. Gov. Wyman Blast President Trump's Latest Effort To Implement Trumpcare, Dismantle The Affordable Care Act

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman released the following statements after President Trump announced that he plans today that he will end cost-reduction subsidy payments for the nation’s healthcare system in his latest efforts to enact Trumpcare through executive authority:

Governor Malloy said, “Trumpcare is an unmitigated disaster for quality, affordable healthcare. This latest move to cut off cost-reduction subsidy payments is vindictive and deliberately designed to sabotage healthcare insurance markets throughout the nation. Premium costs will continue to rise each year, thereby putting healthcare out of reach for many people. While President Trump may turn his back on millions of Americans, I vow to do all that I can to fight back. In Connecticut, we took proactive steps to shore up our own health insurance exchange in order to mitigate the impact on consumers caused by cutting off federal subsidies to insurers. But with that said, Connecticut will join our efforts with countless other states to explore all options to thwart this administration’s assault of the Affordable Care Act.”

Lt. Governor Wyman said, “The economics of this decision are terrible, but what troubles me even more is that President Trump and the highest levels of policymakers in Washington have reached new lows as public servants. While ending cost sharing reduction payments demonstrates a complete absence of judgment and fundamental understanding about healthcare, it’s also downright cruel and victimizes the most vulnerable people in our society. This decision alone erodes the public trust – the idea that government cares about the health and well-being of its citizens, understands that a healthy populace is critical to building a vibrant economy, and is working to contain costs and improve healthcare affordability for everyone. But what’s worse is that it comes on the heels of a series of bad decisions by the President that hurt Americans.

“The relationship couldn’t be more direct – here in Connecticut, insurers filed one set of rates based on the continuation of cost sharing reduction payments, and another higher set based on the elimination of CSRs. Ending payments results in rising premium costs for everyone, making it harder for people to buy coverage, expanding the number of uninsured residents, and driving up the costs of healthcare for everyone. We are three weeks before the start of the 8th annual healthcare open enrollment, and while a bipartisan group in Congress is working to improve the ACA and exchanges throughout the nation are getting the word out about the 2018 enrollment cycle, President Trump is behaving more like a dictator than a public official who cares about the citizens he serves.”
