Training and Professional Development
Training and professional development are conducted by means of instructor led training or web based training.
Instructor led training's are delivered in a classroom or interactive workshop format. This type of training allows for attendee feedback and questions and answers.
Web based training's are competency based trainings or presentations that can be taken via the web. Web based training's are self-directed and self-paced.
Examples of the categories of trainings and professional development provided by OSD staff are highlighted below.
CORE (Curriculum, Orientation, Reinforcement and Enrichment) - Training for new employees which is focused on building competencies related to job function for specific program areas.
Leadership Development Training – Competency based training for employees that will be or may become organizational leaders.
Management Skills Development – Training for existing managers which is focused on the development and refinement of skills needed to execute the role of leader in the agency.
Mandatory Orientation – Competency based training for employees in the fundamental operating policies and protocols that DSS employees are responsible for.
Professional Development – Training and enrichment programs that support personal growth with skills that can be integrated into the workplace.
Program & Policy - Continued updating and building of skills related to job function for specific program areas.
Software Support – Follow up and technical support for staff needing assistance implementing the techniques learned in training.
Software Training – Competency based training in Microsoft Office which will be used to integrate technology and function to enhance effectiveness and create access in service delivery.
Organizational Development & Research
OSD works with DSS to improve effectiveness, achieve goals and creatively manage challenges and change. This is done through a variety of strategies directed towards the entire organization, work groups or individual employee development.
The Leadership Coalition was created as a result of an OSD training on leadership. Darleen Klase (OSD Director) is the Coalition Facilitator and Will Diaz (OSD Trainer) is a founding and current member. It consists of diverse DSS front-line and administrative staff. The DSS Leadership Coalition cultivates an understanding of the agency’s vision of becoming a world-class service organization and develops strategies that can be implemented to realize this vision.
LEAN Project Leadership and Support
OSD works with DSS to utilize lean concepts within the Department in an effort to increase productivity while reducing waste.
OSD provides research support that includes but is not limited to literature reviews, quantitative and qualitative statistical analyses, and deployment of online surveys. Training in areas such as evidence-based practice (EBP), results-based accountability (RBA), and needs assessment are offered as well.
