Dental Assistants Taking Dental X-Rays

Pursuant to Section 20-74ee(3), Connecticut General Statutes, nothing shall be construed to require  license as a radiographer or limit the activities of a dental assistant as defined in Section 20-112a, provided such dental assistant is engaged in the taking of dental x-rays under the supervision and control of a licensed dentist, provided the dental assistant can demonstrate successful completion of the dental radiation and health and safety examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) or a radiation health and safety competency assessment administered by a dental education program in Connecticut that is accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation

A radiographer license is not required of a dental assistant student, intern or trainee pursuing practical training in the taking of dental x-rays provided such activities constitute part of a supervised course or training program and such person is designated by a title that clearly indicates such person’s status as a student, intern or trainee.

The licensed dentist should maintain appropriate documentation of the dental assistant's successful completion of the dental radiography portion of the DANB examination or the competency assessment administered by the CT dental program.
