PTA Applicants Trained Outside of the United States

 

Before applying for licensure, please familiarize yourself with the general licensing policies.

 

Applicants trained outside of the United States may qualify for licensure provided the applicant successfully completed an educational program deemed equivalent to an APTA accredited program by the International Education Research Foundation (IERF); and

 

Please note that recent graduates of physical therapist assistant schools are eligible for a temporary permit  to practice under supervision. 

 

Successfully complete the National Physical Therapy Assistant Examination (NPTAE) administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. 

 

Documentation Requirements:

Applicants must arrange for the submission of the following documents directly to this office from the source:

Official transcript showing date of graduation and award of a physical therapy assistant degree or its equivalent.  Transcripts arriving in a language other than English must be translated in accordance with procedures established by this office.  Instructions for obtaining a translation will be provided upon receipt in this office of a transcript in a language other than English;

A credentials evaluation sent directly to this office by the International Education Research Foundation (IERF); 

If applicable, official verification form sent directly from each state licensing authority where a license or certification is or has ever been held;  

Official verification of successful completion of the NPTAE examination forwarded directly from the FSBPT Score Transfer Service;

 

A completed application and fee in the amount of $190.00.  Applications are only accepted online.  Please select this link to apply online. 

 

Examination Registration:

 

Applicants intending to sit for the NPTAE must successfully complete the examination in order to be eligible for licensure.   Examination candidates may register online.  Applicants registering in this format must submit all required documentation to the Department as outlined above and must be determined eligible by the Department before they will be allowed to sit for the examination.  While you may register online with FSBPT prior to being declared eligible by the Department, applicants found ineligible may be subject to a processing fee by FSBPT.

 

Subsequent to being approved by this office, the candidate will receive all examination related communication including registration, authorizations to test and admissions policy directly from the examination service.  After completion of the examination, you will be notified in writing by the Department regarding your examination performance.
