Graduates of Medical Schools Located Outside the United States

Before applying for licensure, please familiarize yourself with the general licensing policies.
 

Applicants graduating from a medical school located outside the United States, its territories or Canada must be a graduate of a school which is listed in the 1970 World Health Organization (WHO) Directory of Medical Schools; or demonstrate successful completion of a program of education satisfying all requirements specified in the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies; 

 

Applicants who earned a D.O. degree in a country other than the United States or Canada are not eligible for licensure.

 

Hold current certification by the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or have completed an American Medical Association certified Fifth Pathway Program;

 

Completed at least two (2) years of progressive, post-graduate medical training as a resident physician in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or its equivalent;

 

Successfully complete one of the following postgraduate homeopathic training programs:

At least one hundred twenty hours of post-graduate medical training in homeopathy at an institution approved by the Department or the American Institute of Homeopathy;

 

One hundred twenty hours of post-graduate medical training in homeopathy under the direct supervision of a licensed homeopathic physician which must include at least thirty hours of theory and ninety hours of clinical practice.    

 

Successfully complete one of the following examinations:

 

United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLS);

 

National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME);

 

Federation Licensing Examination (FLEX);

 

       National Board of Osteopathic Examiners (NBOME);

 

The examination required to become registered as a Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC); or

 

An acceptable combination as outlined below:

 

NBME Part I or USMLE Step 1

plus

NBME Part II or USMLE Step 2

 plus

NBME Part III or USMLE Step 3 

 

FLEX Component 1

plus

USMLE Step 3 

 

NBME Part I or USMLE Step 1

plus

NBME Part II or USMLE Step 2

Flex Component 2

 

Applicants who have completed the FLEX (Components 1 and 2) must have obtained a passing score of 75 on each component.  Applicants who have completed the FLEX (Day 1, 2 and 3) must have obtained a FLEX-weighted average of 75.   Part(s) of the NBOME plus segment(s) of FLEX or USMLE are not acceptable combinations for Connecticut licensure.

 

Applicants found eligible will be required to  successfully complete an examination is homeopathic medicine administered by the Department.  The licensing examination is based principally upon classical homeopathy, as reflected in the writing of Hahnemann and Kent.  The examination consists of two components:

 

Section I:      Foundations of Homeopathy (History, Philosophy and Principles; Remedies and their Preparation).

 

Section II:      Practice of Homeopathy (Materia Medica, Repertorization; Case Taking and Case Management; Dangers of Homeopathic Prescribing). 

 

The passing standard is a minimum of seventy-five percent (75%) correct on each of the two sections of the examination.

Documentation Requirements

 

A completed, notarized application with photo and fee in the amount of $565.00 in the form of a bank check or money order payable to, “Treasurer, State of Connecticut”;

 

A separate bank check or money order in the amount of  $4.75 made payable to, “Treasurer, State of Connecticut”.  This payment covers the Department’s cost for querying the National Practitioner Data Bank;

 

Please do not combine the above two (2) payments into one single payment as such payment can not be processed and will delay the Department's processing of your application.

 

A School Verification Form and an official transcript of medical education verifying the award of an M.D. degree or its equivalent forwarded directly to this office from the educational institution*;

 

Verification of current certification by the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or verification of successful completion of an American Medical Association certified Fifth Pathway Program*;

 

Verification of completion of at least two (2) years of progressive, post-graduate residency training submitted directly from the Chief of Staff/Program Director of the residency program(s) (please select this link for the required form)*;

 

Verification of the completion of at least one hundred and twenty (120) hours of postgraduate medical training in homeopathy (please select this link for the required form);

 

An official transcript of examination scores forwarded directly to this office from the examination entity*;

 

Verification of any out-of-state licenses held, current or expired, submitted directly to this office from the source.  Please contact the jurisdiction prior to making a request as some jurisdictions charge a fee for completion of the form;

The documentation requirements as identified with an asterisk above may be satisfied by the submission of an official FCVS report submitted directly to this office.   This is a voluntary program established by the Federation of State Medical Boards.  The Department reserves the right to reject any or all portions of the documentation provided.
